Mathematics Requirements

This requirement must be taken for a Letter Grade

Note: Please verify mathematics courses required by major and/or minor department.

Three courses in mathematics, which include one course in calculus and two additional courses chosen from the approved list.

Calculus course:

  • MATH 10A or 20A

Approved list of mathematics courses:

  • DSC 10 – Principles of Data Science
  • MATH 10B – Calculus II; or MATH 20B – Calculus for Science and Engineering
  • MATH 10C – Calculus III; or MATH 20C - Calculus and Analytic Geometry for Science and Engineering
  • MATH 11 – Calculus-based Introductory Probability and Statistics*
  • MATH 18 – Linear Algebra (formerly MATH 20F); or MATH 31AH – Honors Linear Algebra
  • PHIL 10 – Introduction to Logic
  • PSYC 60 – Introduction to Statistics*
  • AP Statistics (Score 3 or higher)*

*Only one of MATH 11, PSYC 60, or AP Statistics may be chosen

Catalog Years Effective Fall 2024: math requirement is the same for all students regardless of transfer or freshmen admit type.

For students admitted as Freshmen before Fall 2024, and Transfers before Fall 2023 the math requirement was two calculus courses and one additional from the approved list. If you would like to follow the new catalog requirement instead, contact Revelle Advising via the Virtual Advising Center (VAC). We will need to manually update your degree audit.

Math Placement Exam

The Math Placement Exam (MPE) is required for all new students unless you have one of the following exemptions:

  • AP Calculus (AB or BC) scores of 2 or higher.

  • IB Mathematics Analyses & Approaches Higher Level score of 5 or higher.

  • Community college or university course in calculus with a grade C- or better.

The Math Placement Exam (MPE) may be retaken after 30 days. See the Math Testing and Placement website for more information.

NOTE: If you take a lower level course than the AP or IB chart indicates, you will not be given credit for that course.
