2027 Revelle Global Seminars

Revelle Global Seminars have taken students across the world: Rome, Edinburgh, London, Madrid, Santiago, Berlin and now Buenos Aires. Locations are offered on a rotating basis.

Revelle in Edinburgh

Known for brilliant writers from Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Irvine Welsh and Ian Rankin, Edinburgh celebrates its rich literary history as a UNESCO City of Literature. Lying on the east coast of the United Kingdom, Edinburgh is a small city with a long history, integrated with natural landscapes, and possessing a rich cultural heritage. Near the city’s center is Arthur’s Seat, a large volcanic hill with an incredible view of the city. From there you can see the stretch of The Royal Mile, from its foot at Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle at the top. All around it is a thriving and lively contemporary city. Look back at the Enlightenment, juxtaposed with exploration of the UK’s vibrant poetry scene—plus plenty of opportunities to explore a sophisticated city, steeped in history. Fulfills 2 Humanities courses.

Revelle in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is one of the great cities of the world. From its origins as a colonial city within the Spanish Empire, Buenos Aires has been a place of contact between distinct cultures and ideas. Today, it is the vibrant capital of one of the most progressive countries in Latin America and a city of wide boulevards, incredible museums, beautiful city parks, world-class restaurants, and a thriving live music scene. It is also the heart of a unique and vibrant Argentinian culture, which has produced some of the most prominent literary figures of the twentieth century, including Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, and Silvina Ocampo. Along with experiencing Buenos Aires, students will have the option of striking out to other parts of Argentina where they can explore beaches along the Atlantic Coast, ski in the Andes mountains, visit one of the world’s largest waterfalls at Iguazú Falls, and brave the wilds of Patagonia. Fulfills 2 Humanities courses.

Revelle in London

In London, students will explore enduring developments in political thought, science, religious ideas and beliefs, literature, the arts, and philosophy during the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, and the period of Early Modern Europe, while also considering broader changes occurring elsewhere in Europe and the Americas during the same period. Students will examine how London — and Britain more broadly — has served as a source of groundbreaking innovation in song and verse over the last century and into the present, using English-language material from diverse regions to understand the deep connections between these expressive forms and modern history, culture, and politics. They will see (and hear) how literature, music, and ideas have shaped and been shaped by the world around them, with the richness, energy, and complexity of the British literary and musical landscape just outside their doorsteps. Fulfills 2 Humanities courses.
