Revelle Global Seminars

Revelle in London

In London, students will explore enduring developments in political thought, science, religious ideas and beliefs, literature, the arts, and philosophy during the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, and the period of Early Modern Europe, while also considering broader changes occurring elsewhere in Europe and the Americas during the same period. Students will examine how London — and Britain more broadly — has served as a source of groundbreaking innovation in song and verse over the last century and into the present, using English-language material from diverse regions to understand the deep connections between these expressive forms and modern history, culture, and politics. They will see (and hear) how literature, music, and ideas have shaped and been shaped by the world around them, with the richness, energy, and complexity of the British literary and musical landscape just outside their doorsteps. Fulfills HUM 3 and HUM 4 or 5 requirement. Learn more about Revelle in London.

Revelle in Madrid

Spain is a vibrant country with beautiful weather and an especially rich cultural history. Long considered the heart of Spain, Madrid has long stood at the crossroads of tradition and transformation, from the Golden Age of Spanish literature to the turbulent intellectual currents of the 20th century. Students can engage directly with foundational texts and artworks — from the paintings of Velázquez and Goya in the Prado Museum to the literary legacy of Cervantes and the cultural reverberations of the Spanish Civil War — while exploring broader themes of modernity, identity, and historical memory. Visitors will find not only world-class museums and historical sites, but also world-class sports teams all over the country.  Fulfills HUM 3 and HUM 4 or 5 requirement. Learn more about Revelle in Madrid.

Revelle in Santiago

In Santiago, you will discover a city of incredible contrasts. You will encounter a colonial city with a rich and diverse history that gave birth to one of the most important literary traditions in Latin America. You will also find the modern capital of one of the wealthiest and most progressive countries in Latin America featuring immersive museums, world-class restaurants, and a thriving live music scene. Santiago is also the gateway to Chile, one of the most ecologically diverse and dramatic landscapes in the world. From your base in Santiago, you could surf in the Pacific Ocean one day, ski in the Andes Mountains the next, and then head down to Southern Chile for a weekend of hiking, rock climbing, and white-water rafting. You could even brave Patagonia and explore one of the natural wonders of the world. Fulfills HUM 5 and HUM 3 or 4 requirement. Learn more about Revelle in Santiago.

Revelle in Rome

When touring Rome in 1786, German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote, “I have finally arrived in this Capital of the World! I now see all the dreams of my youth coming to life.” For more than two thousand years, Rome has been a place of wonder and self-discovery. Its layers of history and its rich intellectual traditions in the arts and letters make it an ideal setting not only to study the humanities but to live them. Today, with a population of nearly three million, Rome is one of Europe’s largest cities and a place where tradition and modernity meld into a dynamic cultural experience. Fulfills HUM 3 and HUM 4 or 5 requirement. Learn more about Revelle in Rome.
