2010 - 2019

Around the world...

The 2010s saw huge improvements and innovation in technology. The beginning of the decade saw the Arab Spring arise in opposition to the government in the Arab world. President Obama, two years into his first term, saw the the Dodd-Frank Act passed in Congress in order to provide financial stability for the United States following the 2008 financial crisis. Smartphones dominated the technological world, and social media became mainstream. With the development of 4G technology, connectivity was at never-before-seen levels.

The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 as a response to growing concerns in climate change around the globe. One year later, the polarized 2016 election cycle in the United States lead to the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States. The decade ended with the emergence of a new, unknown respiratory virus that would later be known as SARS-COV-2 and lead to a global pandemic.

At UC San Diego and Revelle College...

Then Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, in recognition of her contributions to science was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Barack Obama in 2010. Two years later, Chancellor Fox stepped down from her role as Chancellor to return to research and teaching. Dr. Pradeep Khosla of Carnegie Mellon University was appointed by the UC Regents to succeed her as the eight and current Chancellor of UC San Diego.

At Revelle College, following the retirement of Provost Don Wayne in 2014, then Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Initiatives Paul Yu was appointed as Provost. Revelle College saw a flurry of new initiatives for inclusion and a blending og student and academic life under Provost Yu with his student-centered programming at the forefront of his office's outreach. Following his successful tenure as Provost, Professor Yu was appointed Interim Dean of the Graduate Division in 2018. Professor of Economics Kate Antonovics was appointed to serve as Acting Provost of Revelle College and brought with her research in racial equity. After one year, Provost Yu returned as Provost of Revelle College while Acting Provost Antonovics was appointed as Provost of Seventh College.

UC San Diego and Revelle College celebrated its 50th anniversary during the time with events, food, music, alumni, staff, and students all gathering to celebrate the founding of the university with First College
