Humanities Requirements

A five-course sequence in humanities: Humanities 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

This requirement must be taken for a Letter Grade.

The Humanities sequence is offered jointly by the Departments of History, Literature, and Philosophy. It is an introduction to major aspects in the development of Western humanistic tradition. You will learn to interpret important literary, historical, and philosophical principles through lectures, discussions and the writing of essays.

  • Humanities 1 through 5 meet the humanities and writing requirements of Revelle College.
  • Limited transfer course options are available (see Humanities Transfer Course Policy).
  • You must have satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement before taking this sequence.
  • You must complete Humanities 1 or 2 before taking Humanities 3, 4, and 5.  Transfer students without IGETC, consult Revelle Advising.

The Foundations of Western Civilization: Israel and Greece
6 units, offered Winter Quarter, intensive writing

Humanities 2:

Rome, Christianity, and the Middle Ages
6 units, offered Spring Quarter, intensive writing

Humanities 3:

Renaissance, Reformation, and Early Modern Europe
4 units, offered Fall Quarter & Summer Session

Humanities 4:

Enlightenment, Romanticism, Revolution (1660-1848)
4 units, offered Winter Quarter & Summer Session

Humanities 5:

Modern Culture (1848 - present)
4 units, offered Spring Quarter & Summer Session
