Humanities Requirements


A five-course sequence in humanities is required:
Humanities 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

This requirement must be taken for a Letter Grade.

The Humanities sequence is offered jointly by the Departments of History, Literature, and Philosophy. It is an introduction to major aspects in the development of Western humanistic tradition. You will learn to interpret important literary, historical, and philosophical principles through lectures, discussions and the writing of essays.

  • Humanities 1 through 5 are the only UCSD courses that meet the humanities and writing requirements of Revelle College.
  • You must have satisfied the Entry Level Writing requirement before taking this sequence.
  • You must complete Humanities 1 and 2 before taking Humanities 3, 4, and 5.
  • Note: AP or IB credit may not be used to meet any part of this requirement.

Humanities 1:

The Foundations of Western Civilization: Israel and Greece
(6 units) (W) (Includes intensive instruction in university-level writing.)

Humanities 2:

Rome, Christianity, and the Middle Ages
(6 units) (S) (Includes intensive instruction in university-level writing.)

Humanities 3:

Renaissance, Reformation, and Early Modern Europe
(4 units) (F) (Written work is also required, but it is less intensive than in Humanities 1 and 2.)

Humanities 4:

Enlightenment, Romanticism, Revolution (1660-1848)
(4 units) (W) (Written work is also required, but it is less intensive than in Humanities 1 and 2.)

Humanities 5:

Modern Culture (1848 - present)
(4 units) (S) (Written work is also required, but it is less intensive than in Humanities 1 and 2.)
