Humanities Requirements

First-year students: A five-course sequence in humanities: Humanities 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Transfer students: One course in humanities: Humanities 100

This requirement must be taken for a Letter Grade. 

The Remote (R) version of an approved course will also be accepted.

*Upper division major courses may not overlap with general education requirements.

The Humanities sequence is offered jointly by the Departments of History, Literature, and Philosophy. It is an introduction to major aspects in the development of Western humanistic tradition. You will learn to interpret important literary, historical, and philosophical principles through lectures, discussions and the writing of essays.

  • Humanities 1 through 5 meet the humanities and writing requirements of Revelle College for students admitted as first-year students. 
  • Limited transfer course options are available (see Humanities Transfer Course Policy).
  • You must have satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement before taking this sequence.
  • You must complete Humanities 1 or 2 before taking Humanities 3, 4, and 5.  
  • Humanities 100 is required for all new transfer students Fall 2024 and after. 

Transfer Students

HUM 100 is required for all new transfer students beginning in Fall 2024, regardless of transfer type.

  • Transfer students with IGETC will not need to take HUM 1-5.
  • Transfer students without IGETC need to complete HUM 3-5 if their previous transfer coursework does not satisfy requirements. Consult Revelle Advising with any questions.
  • Most transfer students will not need to take HUM 1 or HUM 2. Consult Revelle Advising with any questions.
