Taking Courses Outside of UCSD for Humanities 


Students who entered Revelle as freshmen Fall 2016 and prior
are required to take HUM 1, HUM 2, and at least one course chosen from HUM 3, 4, and 5 at UCSD. Students may transfer, at most, two approved courses for HUM 3, 4, or 5 from another institution.  Transfer courses and UCSD courses must be taken for a letter grade. 

All freshmen entering Revelle Fall 2017 and after are required to take HUM 1, HUM 2, HUM 3 and at least one course chosen from HUM 4 or 5 at UCSD. Students may transfer, at most, one approved course for HUM 4 or 5 from another institution. Transfer courses and UCSD courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Transfer students entering Revelle may complete the HUM 3-4-5 requirement with two approved semester courses, or a combination of one semester course and one course from HUM 3, 4, or 5. Transfer courses and UCSD courses must be taken for a letter grade.

If a course is not on this list, including a course from UCSD, then it will need to be petitioned for Humanities 3-4-5 credit. Please know that petitions are rarely approved.

If you choose to move forward with the petition process, submit an Undergraduate Student Petition to the Humanities Program for consideration. You must attach a syllabus or course description to the petiton. You can submit the form in one of the following ways:

Petitions may take 2-4 weeks for review.

How to Transfer an Approved Humanities Course to UCSD

To learn about course offerings or to enroll, please contact the institution offering the approved transfer course. Remember: All HUM courses must be taken for a letter grade.  Courses may be taken online if that option is available. No petition is necessary for courses on the approved list.

Once you have finished the course, please send an official transcript to the UCSD Admissions Office:

It usually takes 10-12 weeks for UCSD Admissions to post transfer courses to UCSD records. Once your transfer courses have been received by UCSD Admissions and posted to your UCSD records, your Academic History will display your transferred courses. Please continue to check your Academic History for that information.
