Parent & Family Orientation Frequently Asked Questions

Parent and family members are encouraged to attend orientation.  Your participation will enchance your new students' transition from high school to college.

This orientation is designed specifically for family members where you will learn about all the services we provide to students at UC San Diego.

The program includes presentations by staff including but not limited to: student life, academic advising, billing services, saftety, counseling and psychological services, and faculty.

Specially trained orientation leaders will guide you through the extensive orientation program.

A concurrent but separate Parent/Family Orientation session is offered during each New Student Orientation session.

Parents will need to make their own reservation. Students are required to provide at least one parent email in the new student orientation registration site. Once the student does this, parents will automatically receive an electronic invitation to register for parent/family orientation.

We look forward to seeing you at Orientation!

How do I register for Parent & Family Orientation?

A concurrent but separate Parent/Family Orientation session is offered during each New Student Orientation session.

Parents must make their own reservation. Students are required to provide at least one parent email in the new student orientation registration site. Once the student does this, parents will automatically receive an electronic invitation to register for parent/family orientation.

Can I attend the same session as my student?

Yes. Most parents choose to come to the same session as their student, but if it is more convenient, you may attend at a different session than your student.

If you would like to make a change to  your reservation, please send a request by email to revelleorientation@ucsd.edu.

Please include the following information in your request:

  • Your name
  • Student's full legal name
  • Phone number (parent number)
  • Student's Orientation session number and date
  • Session/date change request

No phone or in-person requests will be accepted.

Requests must be received at least 10 business days before your desired session or a $25.00 administrative fee will be charged.

Will I see my student during Orientation?

Once you and your student leave the opening session at the start of Orientation, you may catch a glimpse of each other, but the two programs are separate. You should not plan to spend any time together.

How much does Parent & Family Orientation cost?

Program Package (does not include lodging): $80.00

Since Orientation is a self-supporting program, each person (including children) who attends, must pay the Orientation fee. Please note: There is no on-site registration.

When, and how, do I pay for Parent & Family Orientation?

For students, Orientation billing will appear on either their August or October billing statement. Parents pay for Parent & Family Orientation when you register. Until payment is received, you are not confirmed.

Can children attend Parent & Family Orientation?

Although young children may find Orientation a bit boring, they are welcome to attend with their parents. Unfortunately we are not able to offer child-care or special activities for children. The Parent Orientation fee will apply to each child, and they must be registered in the parent/family orientation registration site.

What if I can't attend a session?

Students whose parents cannot attend Orientation will be given a copy of our Revelle College Parent Handbook. Your student will be able to share the information they gained from New Student Orientation.

What happens if I need to change or cancel my reservation?
