Parent & Family Orientation Frequently Asked Questions

Parents and family members are encouraged to attend orientation.  Your participation will enchance your student's transition from high school to college.

This orientation is designed specifically for parents and family members to learn about the services we provide to students at UC San Diego.

The program includes presentations by staff including but not limited to: student life, academic advising, billing services, saftety, counseling and psychological services, and faculty.

Specially trained orientation leaders will guide you through the extensive orientation program.

*Please note that session 4 is limited and will be reserved for out-of-state and international students traveling long distances. If traveling in June creates an undue financial hardship, please contact our Student Affairs office at 858-534-3493.

How do I register for Parent & Family Orientation?

A concurrent but separate parent and family orientation session is offered during each first-year student orientation session.

Parents must complete their own registration. Students are required to provide at least one parent email in the first-year student orientation registration site. Once the student does this, parents automatically receive an email invitation to register for parent/family orientation that will contain information for registration.

Can I attend the same session as my student?

Yes. Most parents choose to come to the same session as their student, but if it is more convenient, you may attend at a different session than your student.

  • Your name
  • Student's full legal name
  • Student's PID number, if known
  • Phone number (parent number)
  • Student's orientation session number and date
  • Session/date change request

Requests must be received at least five business days before your desired session or a $25.00 administrative fee may be charged.

Will I see my student during orientation?

Once you and your student leave the values and interest session during the morning, you may catch a glimpse of each other, but the two programs are separate. Plan to spend most of orientation apart from each other.

How much does Parent & Family Orientation cost?

Program package (does not include housing): $80.00 each person

Since orientation is a self-supporting program, each adult who attends must pay the orientation fee. Please note: There is no on-site registration.

Click HERE to discover UC San Diego partner hotels. Students attending orientation sessions 1, 2, and 3 must stay in our residence halls during orientation; residence hall housing is NOT available to those students attending session 4 who do not have a guaranteed housing contract.

When, and how, do I pay for Parent & Family Orientation?

Payment for parent and family orientation is due upon registering for parent and family orientation. Your payment must be received before your registration is confirmed. Student orientation fees will appear on the student's August or October billing statement. 

What happens if I need to change or cancel my reservation?

  • Your name
  • Student's full legal name
  • Phone number (parent number)
  • Original session date
  • Date change request

Change requests must be received at least five business days before your confirmed session. Change requests will be honored only if space and staffing limitations allow. 

In order to receive a refund, cancellations must be received at least five business days prior to the first day of your reserved Orientation session.

Where do I check in for Orientation?

Parent and family check-in is located on Revelle Plaza at 7:30am.

Where do I park during Orientation?

Please park your car in Parking Lots P102 or P103, west of Galbraith Hall. Click here for a Google map that you can use for personalized driving directions to Parking lots 102 and 103After parking your car, be sure to obtain a parking permit at the orientation check-in station. Place this permit in your car after you have checked in.

Note: Revelle College staff are not authorized to resolve any parking tickets for you should you be ticketed. Parking tickets are solely your responsibility.
