General Education Requirements: Which courses are acceptable for Revelle requirements?
-
Community College Courses:
-
Courses From Schools Other Than California Community Colleges:
Courses approved to meet the Revelle College General Education (GE) requirements are listed on articulation agreements for each California Community College. Copies of articulation agreements can be printed from the website: http://www.assist.org.
To select courses appropriate for GE's from http://www.assist.org, use the scroll down menu on the main page to select the community college from which you wish to transfer courses, select UCSD on the next pull down menu, and finally, select Revelle College from the list marked "For General Education/Breadth."
No petition is needed if the course is on the articulation agreement and it does not duplicate previous course work. If the course is not on the articulation agreement or if there is any question of duplication with previous coursework, the course should be approved by petition prior to taking the course.
These courses must be approved by petition prior to taking the courses. Submit a petition, along with course descriptions and syllabi, to Revelle College for consideration.
Major Requirements: Which courses are acceptable for my major requirements?
-
Upper Division Courses taken outside of UCSD should be pre-approved by petition by your major department. Submit an undergraduate student petition, along with a course description, to your major department for review and consideration. Courses must be upper-division (junior/senior level courses) and must be taken only at a four-year institution. Upper-division courses may not be taken at a community college.
-
Lower Division Courses taken outside of UCSD are acceptable, if they are on the major pre-requisite approximation charts. You may review these charts at the Revelle College Advising Office or at your major department. If the desired course is not on the approximation charts, it must be approved by petition. Submit an undergraduate student petition, along with a course description, to your major department for review and consideration
Area of Focus: Which courses are acceptable for the Area of Focus?
-
To satisfy the Area of Focus, you may complete two semester courses (at least 6 semester units) or three quarter courses (at least 12 quarter units) in an area non-contiguous to your major. These courses must be focused on one department, subject area, or topic. The courses may be lower division or upper division and may be taken on a pass/not pass basis. It is recommended that you take these courses as upper division, so that you will meet the mandatory requirement of 60 upper division units for graduation. Note: courses taken at a community college are considered lower-division.
-
File the minor petition with your minor department listing the transfer courses. Attach course descriptions for the transfer courses.
-
Courses that are not listed on the articulation or approximation charts must be verified as U.C. transferable by the UCSD Admissions Office. Call UCSD Admissions at 534-3145.
Units, Grades and GPA Credit:
-
Units: Semester and Quarter Units Conversion:
-
1 semester credits = 1.5 quarter units
-
3 semester credits = 4.5 quarter units
-
4 semester credits = 6.0 quarter units
-
-
Semester/Quarter Courses: Revelle College is not concerned with the number of units to meet a G.E. requirement (Except for Area of Focus), but instead counts:
-
1 semester course = 1 quarter course
-
2 semester courses = 3 quarter courses
-
-
Grades:
-
Grades from other U.C.'s DO count towards the UCSD grade point average.
-
Cal State University (CSU) and Community College grades do NOT count towards the UCSD grade point average.
-
-
U.C. transferable units DO count towards graduation.
-
U.C. Extension grades do not count towards the UCSD grade point average and only U.C. transferable units count toward graduation.
-
Grades from other four year institutions (including Stanford, Harvard, MIT etc.) do not count in the UCSD grade point average, but U.C. transferable units do count toward graduation.
-
When selecting courses outside UCSD, do not duplicate material previously taken.
-
All courses required for letter grade at UCSD must be taken for letter grade elsewhere. The following Revelle College GE's may be taken on a pass/not pass basis: American Cultures, Fine Arts, and Foreign Language. Only non-science majors may take the Natural Science requirement courses on a pass/not pass basis.
-
If you have any doubts about the transferability of a course, it is highly recommended that you meet with a Revelle College Academic Counselor (or your major department academic advisor) for assistance. It is the student's responsibility to verify that a course will transfer to UCSD and will be applied towards their degree requirements.
-
Humanities 3-4-5: 2 semester courses = 3 quarter courses. Courses must be chosen from approved Literature, European History (not U.S.), or Philosophy (not Logic) courses as listed in the "Humanities" category (not composition) on the articulation agreement. Reference http://www.assist.org for specific details or meet with a Revelle College Academic Counselor.
-
Note: If you have already completed Humanities 1 and 2 you may not take composition courses (English 1A - 1B or equivalent).
-
-
Social Science: 1 Semester American Cultures and 1 semester Social Science is equivalent to 3 quarter courses for the Social Science and American Cultures requirements.
-
Language: A 3rd Semester or 4th Quarter language course meets the requirement.
-
Calculus/Natural Science: See a Revelle College Academic Counselor for assistance.
-
Note: Reference "Unraveling Revelle" regarding Revelle GE requirements or check our web page: http://revelle.ucsd.edu/.
-
-
Senior Residency: Seniors must take 36 of their last 45 units at UCSD (see a counselor if this is a problem). Many departments also have an additional departmental residency requirement for majors. Check with your department for major residency requirements.
